Straight Up Reviews: Uzumaki (2000 Film)

Unlike the Manga, this one won't be a long review, because it's not a long movie.  Uzumaki is the first adaptation of the manga of the same name. It stars Eriko Hatsune and Fhi Fan as Kirie Goshima and Suichi Saito. This movie has the distinction of being made before the Manga officially ended. So while the premise is pretty much the same, there are moments within the movie that differ from the original Manga.  There will be Spoilers.

The movie begins much like the Manga with Kirie and Shuichi, watching the events regarding his father Toshio Saito. Much like the manga he's obsessed with the spirals and his obsession leads to his suicide. The difference being, that unlike the Manga, where he twisted his body to fit in an old small wooden washtub, he instead puts himself in an electric washing machine and instead of Shuichi discovering it, Kirie discovers his corpse, eliminated the need for Shuichi to explain like he did in the manga. His whole story ends roughly the same. He gets cremated, his smoke and ashes turn into a spiral that trickles down Dragonfly pond.  However here's where the differences start to occur even more.

For starters, Shuichi and Kirie are no longer the same age. In the Manga, both were 18 (forever) while in the movie, Shuichi is in his mid 20s while Kirie is 15. Second, where Kirie's mom was a recurring character in the manga, while in the movie she died before the events started. Her brother does not exist either.

Then you have their overall personalities being changed.  In the Manga, Shuichi, was an eccentric, yet well-intentioned heroic character who could have avoided the curse all together had he not been so focused on getting Kirie the hell out of Dodge.  Here, while it's easy to still feel bad for him due to what he has to witness in this movie, he comes across as slightly manipulative and more of a jerk. Granted he can be a jerk in the Manga sometimes, but it's often unintentional or during extreme stress. He unintentionally hurts Kirie or anyone around him when he flips out. Here, he's been manipulating her since they were kids making her overtly dependent on him. The only thing that hasn't changed was his warnings about the spiral curse, which even the movie can't bring themselves to say he's wrong on that.  Then you have Kirie. While Manga Kirie can have moments where she can be stupid, something myself and Linkara before me have pointed out, she does develop as a character later on. Becoming more aware of the curse and only giving up because she's too tired and doesn't want to leave without Shuichi or her parents in the end.  In this movie, it seems all she's good for is witnessing bad events and screaming.

Where the Manga was episodic, with each chapter dealing with an individual problem up until the last chapters. The filmmakers decided to have each variation of the curse all happening simultaneously with the movie showing it building up.

In the beginning act we see the events of Chapter 2 with Yukie's descent into Spiral-Phobia and we see the events of Chapter 6, 7 and 8. By showing the suicide that prompted Sekino to grow her hair into curls, Mitsuru scaring and stalking Kirie and Katayama in the beginning stages of his snail transformation.  The movie also introduces Ichirou Tamura in place of Chie Maruyama as the reporter investigating the events. Only where Chie came into investigate the aftermath of the worst of it, Ichirou was investigating the mere beginning of it. Looking for clues to why Toshio would do what he did. For Saito asked Ichirou know Kurozu-Cho's history in an effort to add more to his spiral collection. As those chapters slowly get expanded on, Ichirou investigates footage Toshio filmed before his suicide. It showed him placing a mirror in the center of the washer tumbler before stepping in and getting spiralled. Becoming the first clue to the movie's version of the mystery.  In a kind gesture, Ichirou drives Kirie home. As they talk about Shuichi, they nearly hit an apparition of Toshio, only for it really to be Kirie's Father Yasuo Goshima. Who had just returned from Dragonfly Pond collecting mud for his sculptures, beginning the events of Chapter 4 in the movie. As the events of the chapters begin to escalate, Ichirou goes to investigate the history of the town himself in an effort to figure out the significance of the mirror in the washing machine. He finds out that it symbolizes sinking a mirror into the bottom of a pond, which signifies a snake returning home to it's favourite water. Which in turn causes him to catch wind of a snake cult. Which leads him to an article regarding a Typhoon destroying the town decades back. Causing him to come to the conclusion that this phenomena is the result of a curse caused by said cult. I'll talk about that one in my conclusion. After Yukie is put in the hospital, Shuichi and Kirie are on their way back to Dragonfly pond to meet Ichirou who wants to share the information with them. Along the way they are confronted by Mitsuru who dies the same way he dies in the original chapter. Only instead of doing a stupid romantic gesture, by trying to stop an oncoming car with the power of love, he dies for a still stupid, but more rational under said stupid reason.  In an effort to make sure she remembers him always, he intentionally commits suicide by car, rather than accidentally.  Unlike the original chapter, it wasn't just a random car either. It was Ichirou's car. Causing him to lose control and crash into a pole. Killing him too and leaving a spiral shaped crack in the windshield. While this movie is way off on the story of the manga, I'll give it points for trying to at least mimic Junji Ito's style of sliver of hope ripped away by cosmic dread. Eventually Yukie kills herself putting Shuichi further in the deep end as he sees another cremation spiral in the sky. Forming apparitions of his mother and father, the mother screaming in anguish and the father devouring her. All while the chapters come to their own conclusions, with Chie appearing as an anchor recapping them. The two students and teacher turning into snail people. As well Sekino's hair becoming sentient and hypnotizing the student body. With the town slowly caving into spiral madness. All while a typhoon is slowly heading for town.  Kirie and Shuichi go to look for Yasuo so they can get out of town, but as they search for him two things begin to happen.  One, Shuichi's leg breaks on it's own. Two, her father finished the work, much like the manga, his pottery became warped after baking. However her father is no where in sight.  Shuichi's other leg breaks and he discovers to his horror, not only can he not move, but his legs are twisting together, turning him into a spiral. As his body starts to turn more, Shuichi at first tells Kirie to run for it. He seems to die tragically only to come back as a twisting spiral demon intent on making Kirie a spiral too. Just as he grabs her, the movie smashes to black. Cutting to the next day.  Showing the aftermath of the chapters, with Sekino's rotting husk hung by her hair. As well as Chie having worst luck as an extra than she did as a main character. With her news truck smashed and her along with her crew dead. Her body also turning into a snail person. A police officer having a spiral shaped gunshot wound in his head as their sloppy way of recreating Azami's iconic shot. Shuichi's twisted corpse is scene with many spirals drawn in the sand of which he lies. With Kirie no where to be seen.  Finally the last shot of Dragonfly Pond, Yasuo's mud bucket afloat in the center,  implying he may have drowned trying to get more mud. The typhoon hovering above it.

Now because the movie was being made before the Manga was even finished, obviously some changes had to be made on the fly.  For example, the Spiral Curse appears to be more grounded. With each death being a bizarre accident or suicide and each spiral related obsession initially implied to be hallucination up until the transformation stuff started to happen.  It didn't quite become supernatural until the snail people finished their transformations and Shuichi became a human snake.  So naturally the more bizarre stuff, like Azami's black hole head would have not fit in well with the Friedken style theme this movie seemed to go for. Of course the ending itself along with the explanation of the spirals origins had to be changed as well, because by the time it was finished filming there was no ending and it was too late to change it now. Hence why the curse only effected the people instead of the entire town's structure like in the manga.

The one thing that seemed to throw me off, was the conclusion that the whole thing was caused by a snake cult.  Now don't get me wrong, it's not completely out of left field as snakes have been used within the manga. Specifically Chapter 5.  As well as the theme of the spiral repeating itself as equal to a snake eating it's own tail.  When I first heard about it, I thought it was a cop out to explain what was meant to be roughly ambiguous.  However with that said, a cult that worships the spiral would fit right into the mainstream manga.  Not to mention, someone had to have built those ruins.

This movie isn't by any means a good adaptation, but it's not as bad as one would think and until the anime gets broadcast there is nothing to compare it to.

Straight Up Reviews: Johnny Got His Gun

Dalton Trumbo.  Most people when they hear that name, they often think of a few things: 1. The Blacklist. 2. I'm Spartacus. And 3. The biopic staring Bryan Cranston. However, while I've only heard of 2 of three of those things. I never really got an in depth look at his work until a few months ago. With his most well known work, Johnny Got His Gun.  This was one of the rarities in film where the Author of the Book also served as writer and director of the movie. A notion shared with William Peter Blatty who both wrote and directed Exorcist III (Based on his book Legion) and The Ninth Configuration a spin-off of the franchise. As well as Stephen King who directed Maximum Overdrive (Based on Trucks.) Just to name a few.  This was also one of the world's first medias to delve into the subject of Anti-War.

When one thinks of an Anti-War book or movie, they often always have The War in Vietnam in mind.  However Trumbo had the distinction of predating that medium 17 years prior to when the War in 'Nam began. His subject, while written just as World War II was about to begin, was on a well known, lesser looked at War. World War I. The book was written in 1938 and published in 1939. However Trumbo had to halt publishing, in support of WWII, because even he thought the Nazis were that bad and didn't want them or sympathizers to use this work as a means of propaganda.  Once WWII ended, he republished the book.

The movie, later made in 1971, was his first and only movie he served as director. Both tackling the consequences of the draft and involvement in the war.

Now let me go on record and say I do not like Communism.  Nor do I support the Communist Party past, present or future.  However I do believe that while Political views do factor in with a story like this, that Trumbo could be Liberal, Conservative, Libertarian and so forth and so on and it wouldn't impact what the story was trying to say whatsoever. The meat of the story while it has political aspects, is moreso on the consequences of War as a whole. Which is often something everyone agrees on regardless of where they come from. With that said, let's get into the story.

The movie stars Timothy Bottoms, who would later go on to play a parody of George W. Bush in the comedy series, That's My Bush. However this story is not very humorous I can tell you that.

He plays Joe Bonham. A typical American Man, who seems to have it all. A family to support through his job as a baker and a girlfriend who loves him very much. After spending one last night with her, he goes off to fight the war, despite his girlfriend's protests.  After disposing a body found caught in barbwire, Joe gets hit with an Artillery shell. Costing him his arms, legs, hearing and face.  He's taken to a hospital where they keep him alive, through a breathing tube and sustain him through a feeding tube. They initially assume he's brain dead. However that is far from the case. For the only thing intact other than his torso and his genitals is his brain.  Most of the movie revolves around him piecing together what has happened to him. While also flashing back to his memories.  Trumbo was very unique in his choice of cinematography. Having Joe's present day be in black and white, while his dreams and memories were in colour.  While the movie does not show any gorey details, we get a sense of what has happened to poor Joe through his inner monologue.  Describing in graphic detail, what he has lost.  His body kept in a supply closet in an undisclosed military hospital.  Initially kept in the dark, until the more compassionate nurses let the sunlight in for him allowing him to develop a concept of time and tell how many days he's been in the room that he knows of.  Every time the doctors see him move, they mistake it for involuntary muscle spasms and tranquilize him. Causing his dreams and memories to mash together. Two of which involving him meeting Jesus Christ, played by Donald Sutherland. While most of them involve his girlfriend disappointed that he left her behind only to become what he is now. As well as his father, who initially encourages him to join the war for democracy, then laments over his own death. All hope seems to have been lost, until a nurse, testing his sense of touch, traces the words "Merry Christmas" on his chest.  To which he understands. Giving him some semblance of hope. During his final fantasy, his father gives him the most useful advice.  Telling him to remember when he used to telegraph his friend and asks him if he remembers Morse Code.  Initially Joe refuses that plan, because he has no arms to use a telegraph, but his dad gives him one last piece of advice "Use your head."  With that, Joe begins tapping S-O-S. The nurse initially mistakes it for another spasm, but then realizes he's trying to communicate, so she brings in some officials. One of which understands Morse.  He understands the call for help and asks Joe what he wants.  Joe makes two requests. The first, to be put on a freak show, so that he personally can show the audience the horrors of war.   The Second, barring the first request, two words "Kill me."  They refuse both requests citing that it's against regulation and try to get his name. Only for him to keep repeating the second request.  They all leave except the nurse who tries to honor his request, only to be stopped by one of the officials. Joe is then put back in the dark and succumbs to insanity. Repeating "S-O-S Help Me." over and over again.

The movie I can safely say, is way scarier than any horror movie and war movie I have ever seen in my life and I've seen a lot of them. It was a minor success and mostly forgotten. That is until Metallica bought the rights to it abridging the movie through their music video "One"as seen here.

As a result of buying the rights and forgetting about them, Metallica nearly ruined a chance of future home releases, before authorizing them. Due to the popularity of the music video and many anti-war activism that went on over the years, the movie gathered a cult following.

Before Trumbo adapted it, it was originally adapted on NBC Radio, with James Cagney playing Joe in 1940.

It was then later adapted into a stage play in 1982 with Jeff Daniels as Joe.

Then adapted as a TV Film in Prague titled Johnny Si Vzal Pušku in 1984.

Then adapted into a one man show stage play starring Ben McKenzie in 2008.

It's last known adaptation is a stage play in the UK that went from May 2014 to  June 2014.

The movie should be on the list of movies to watch before you die, because despite your views on Trumbo, I guarantee that it's an experience you'll never forget.

Straight Up Reviews: Bill and Ted Face The Music

It took me a while and I finally got to see this movie. A movie that was nearly 30 years in the making and at this time of crisis, one we didn't know we needed. Yet we were glad to have it. Since my main focus has been making and selling music, I figured it'd be most appropriate to do a review based off one of my many influences.  But before we get into it, a little history.

In 1989, the world was introduced to two dimwitted yet kindhearted individuals. Bill S. Preston Esquire (Alex Winter) and Ted Theodore Logan (Keanu Reeves).  What started out as a cheesy cash in for duo comedies like Cheech and Chong as well as the sci-fi craze brought on by Doctor Who and Back to the future, grew into a cult phenom that transcends the farthest reaches of space and time.  History teacher and Rock and Roll Enthusiast, Rufus played by the late great comedy legend George Carlin, hails from San Dimas California in the year 2688. At that point, Bill and Ted's band The Wyld Stallyns has become not just a great rock band, but also a way of life for people to live by.  World Peace was achieved, contact with other life forms was established and the universe couldn't be happier. There was just one problem. That legacy was on the verge of failure. While they are in high spirits, Bill and Ted cannot play and are faced with the threat of separation. Why? Because they are failing history. And should they fail for the final time, Ted will be sent to Military School, separating them and the band for good.  In an attempt to steer the future in the right course, Rufus assigned by the most important people, went back to San Dimas in 1988 to help them pass. Their assignment? What would historical figures think of San Dimas of today.  Inspired by Rufus and their future selves, Bill and Ted travel through time using a machine disguised as an ordinary phone booth. Where they collect as many figures they could fit and have them tour San Dimas before presenting them to their high school through their history report.  Along the way they meet the loves of their lives, Princess Elizabeth and Joanna of Medieval England. As well as the likes of Napoleon Bonaparte, William "Billy The Kid" Bonney, Socrates, Sigmund Freud, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan and Abraham Lincoln.  Although they can travel anywhere at any time, their version of time travel runs on real running time. Meaning they have hours to complete their mission. After many close calls, the duo succeeds and even reunite with the princesses and get to work on kick starting the Wyld Stallyns. The movie itself on top of being a creative comedy, has themes of music, love, peace and friendship. As well as the rarely used ability known as the Time Game. In which they vow to go back in time and help their past selves out of a few jams. The movie itself has also helped kickstart both Reeves and Winter into stardom before they branched out on their own. With Reeves being a powerhouse of an A-List actor, while Winter makes a killing as a director.

3 years later, a sequel was released. Reuniting the duo whilst Reeves was fresh off Point Break. Most sequels at the time would often retread on the original and while there have been call backs, this one is among the great sequels to have a unique premise.  Bill and Ted are still down on their luck and unable to play, however they managed to land a gig in the battle of the bands. Which if successful would put their foot in the door as the future rock stars they are destined to be. Despite that they live a somewhat happy life and have even proposed to Joanna and Elizabeth. However it takes a dark turn when Da Nomolos, Rufus' former Gym Teacher and head of a terrorist group against the way of life Bill and Ted inspired; decides to change history. By sending two evil robotic duplicates of Bill and Ted back in time and killing them before they could play.  As a result, Bill and Ted end up ghosts and try everything in their spiritual power to warn their friends and loved ones. Unfortunately as a result of said warning, they are both banished to Hell in which they confront their personal fears and sins.  To get out, they challenge the Grim Reaper (William Sadler) to a series of board games in an effort to regain their mortal lives. They win and even recruit Death for help in defeating their robot counterparts before they ruin their lives and the world. They go to Heaven where they meet Station, a duo of Martian Scientists who help them construct good robot versions of them.  Upon defeating their evil counterparts and besting De Nomolos in the Time Game, they use the booth to finally learn how to play before establishing themselves in the world of Rock and Roll.

While this movie was not as well received as the first, it did get loved enough that the fans demanded more.  While Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter were all for it, they couldn't make the movie due to an entanglement of rights issues. One that took 29 years to correct. Needless to say it was well worth the wait and we were lucky to even get it whether it was good or sucked.

Filming was already finished in 2019 and they meant to release the movie was meant to be released in theatres August 21 2020. However due to the Covid-19 Pandemic said release was moved to August 28 and limted to select theatres and digital download.

 There Will Be Spoilers

The movie takes place nearly 30 years after the events of Bogus Journey. The Wyld Stallyns achieved fame and fortune, but in the recent years there have been two problems. The first, like many Rock Stars before and after, they were well past their glory days and were not as popular as they were after the Battle of The Bands.  The second, they haven't written the song that was meant to unite the world into the Utopia they were destined to create.  As if things couldn't get any worse, reality was about to collapse in 78 minutes, putting tremendous pressure on them.  So they plan on using the Time Booth, to go further into the future and get the song from their future selves.  Reflecting on their lives on the way.  As all that is going on, their daughters Thea "Little Ted" Preston and Billie "Little Bill" Logan decide to go on their own time travelling adventure to gather history's greatest musicians to help their dads with the song. Just as it seems like they succeed a robot sent by the new future leaders to kill them out of disappointment of their failure.  However instead he accidentally kills their kid's, Rufus' daughter Kelly, Ted's father and the historical figures: Louise Armstrong, Jimi Hendrix, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ling Lun, Kid Cudi and a cavewoman drummer.  This forces Bill and Ted to sacrifice their song and their lives to go get them out of Hell. As a result they reunite with Death after a bitter falling out and with minutes to spare find out two important details. The first is that in order for their song to work, they need to have everyone throughout time and space playing with them. The second, their daughters were the ones who created the song and recorded it on the day of unification.  The movie ends with the Wyld Stallyns fulfilling their destiny and uniting the world through their music.

While this movie is a critical success I have discovered a lot of people found some faults in it. So before I give my final conclusion I shall address and debunk them.

Fault #1: Daughters?

I can see why many got upset with this, but it must be pointed out. Many assumed that Little Bill and Little Ted were to be sons due to the masculine names. However with the exception of non-canon expanded material, the gender of their children was never addressed until the third movie.  Not to mention the original babies that portrayed them were girls in real life.  That being said there are a few things you should know. First off they aren't the first daughters to have masculine names. If the name Kelly can be a man and a woman's name cis and/or trans, then it's not unreasonable to name their kids Bill and Ted as well. Second off, unlike most examples of female counterparts of male characters, these ones were never considered forced or phoned in. They never went Captain Marvel or Ghostbusters Answer the call. Nor was their credit to the song some vain attempt to promote third wave characters. They were simply just the next generation going by the philosophies of what came before them.

Fault #2: They already united the world in Bogus Journey.

That's a common misconception.  Although they toured the world and people loved their music and the movie did make mention of that. The battle of the bands was never meant to be their world union moment. Part of which I'll explain in the next fault, but essentially as said before, that was meant to put their foot in the door and establish themselves as a band. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither would something as big as a universe uniting wouldn't be that easy.

Fault #3: The Song Itself.

Now this one I can understand. Many people have considered God Gave Rock and Roll To You and In Time to be their Universe Union song. And to be fair, it's easy to see why. They're very epic songs.  However there is one small problem.  The prophecy stated that it was one of "Their" songs that unite the universe. Whereas those songs, while they were known to play them, they didn't create them.  God Gave Rock and Roll To You was the brain child of KISS and Steve Vai, while In Time was created by Robbie Robb. As for why their songs were part of the band in the first place, they wouldn't be the first or last musicians to do cover songs. Comparing the song they used in the movie to two songs created by legendary rockers is grossly unfair.  As for the song itself, Face The Music. As a standalone song it is epic in it's own right. It was that song that inspired me to give this movie a chance to begin with.  But don't take my word for it. Listen for yourself.

And if you like the song, grab your phone and the loudest Bluetooth Speaker you can carry. Walk to a spot in your neighbourhood where everyone can hear it and blast it to your heart's content.  Make the fictional idea that one song can unite the world a reality.

When I decided to watch Bill and Ted Face The Music, I expected a goofy comedy with some heart in it.  When I watched it, I got exactly what I expected and one unexpected thing. Not only was this movie the most Excellent conclusion to a Bodacious trilogy. The heart part has swollen so grand, that it made me cry with joy.  But don't take my word for it. See it for yourself.

Due to the limited release, this movie is available not just on digital download, but for rent on Youtube. When it will be available for purchase I don't know. I do know this though, it is worth the watch.

In closing, I say onto you readers the only words you need to know.

Be excellent with each other and party on dudes!!

Catch ya later.

Straight Up Reviews: Joker

It's been a long time since I took the time to go to the movies. Most of the time, in order for me to watch let alone review a film, I've often waited until it was on TV or available on streaming sites and home video. But in the case of Joker I was compelled to see it in theaters. Even going as far as sitting in the front row so that whatever terrifying shit came my way, would be up close and personal.  Needless to say I was not disappointed. But before I get into it. Much like The Wall. A little history first.

Joker was first introduced in 1951, in the issue of Detective Comics #168. Created by Bob Kane, Bill Finger and Jerry Robinson. Since then even to this day, he was often described as the definitive Batman villain. A clown based villain, who's main shtick is the following: Seeing vicious crimes as funny as practical jokes, revelling in the anarchy they cause, being nearly one step ahead of the Dark Knight and often always trying his best to either kill him in elaborate ways or corrupting him by any means necessary. Even in the age where Batman never killed, Joker was one of the few he admitted to be willing to make an exception of.  There were many stories, both in comic and other forms of media that often offered their own take on the villain. Such as Death in The Family, which killed off the Second Robin, Jason Todd. As well as the famous Alan Moore Graphic, The Killing Joke. He has been portrayed by many legendary actors, such as Caesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto and just recently Joaquin Phoenix. The latter of which we will look into today.

The movie was directed by Todd Phillips, who got his claim to fame making the Hangover movies.  However this movie was a far contrast to his more lighthearted dark comedies.   Taking on such influences as Martin Scorsese. Whom was the first choice to direct the movie, before briefly becoming executive producers. While known for dark elements, this movie is not part of the fan nicknamed DCEU. Which housed such movies as Man Of Steel, Batman V Superman, Wonder Woman, Shazam and Aquaman. (Not Justice League, #ReleaseTheSnyderCut)

Spoilers aside.Various news mediums have often made the claims regarding the potential controversy. From using a certain song from a convicted Sex Offender. (Which I had no idea he was until I heard about it.), to the "potential" copy cat crimes in it's name similar to the controversy surrounding Clockwork Orange and the Aurora Theater Shooting. While I sympathize with the victims of those crimes, I refuse to believe this movie or any movie of similar variety is responsible. As Billy Loomis once said "Movies don't create psychos. Movies make psychos more creative." The fact that the Divided States of Trump or DST for short, would go as far as military action regarding it, is beyond asinine.

With that said, let's take a look.

Now this incarnation of the Clown Prince of Crime, goes by the name Arthur Fleck. A struggling Stand-up comic and part time clown, living in Gotham City in 1981.  He lives with his ailing mother in a rundown apartment with only one known neighbor. Sophie Dumond. A single mother whom Arthur has an attraction too.  In the beginning we get a glimpse into Arthur's life as he struggles with  overbearing bosses, apathetic citizens petty thugs and a series of symptoms of mental disorders not fully defined, but require him to be heavily medicated and attending sessions with a psychiatrist. All the while determined to land his dream gig on a comedy based talk show, hosted by Murray Franklin, played by Scorsese regular Robert DeNiro. After a recent incident involving his sign stolen by thugs, who in turn lure him into an alley to assault him; one of Arthur's colleagues, Randall gives him a pistol to defend himself. Which later gets him into trouble when he entertains sick kids. During a fateful subway ride home, he encounters three men hassling a woman who turn their attention to him due to his spontaneous laughter. When they try to harm him, Arthur snaps and shoots the three dead. Causing the third to suffer.  Upon returning home, he uses his newfound confidence to woo Sophie and gain fame through his stand-up routine.  However his fame turns into infamy when his murders reach the news and he finds to his shock the three men were part of a scholarship program run by Billionaire Thomas Wayne. In his bid to run for mayor of Gotham, Thomas derives the murders and calls anyone envious of their success "Clowns". Prompting ordinary citizens to don clown masks and protest his bid, while further causing themselves and Gotham to slip into Anarchy.  As if things weren't screwed up enough, Penny whom used to work for Thomas, believes him to be Arthur's biological father. Prompting his own search for the truth, by stalking Thomas and his son Bruce.  Penny suffers from a stroke and much to Arthur's joy he finally gets noticed by Murray Franklin.  Only for the joy to become sorrow when Murray only shows clips of his Stand-Up to belittle and mock him.  As Arthur continues to unravel, the funding for his medication and sessions were cut prompting him to slip further into insanity. Fortune smiles however when Franklin offers to have him on the show to perform a routine. Unfortunately news of the crimes coupled, his past incidences, with his mother's failing health have lead Arthur to run afoul of two detectives who suspect him. Upon visiting Arkham Asylum after a violent confrontation with Thomas Wayne, Arthur finds out the truth. He is not Thomas' biological son and Penny is not his biological mother. The latter of which both abused and allowed her boyfriends to abuse him as well.  Which prompts him to euthanize Penny with a pillow.  When he returns to Sophie's apartment, he finds to his horror, that they only met this time and that all the other times she's interacted with him were delusional hallucinations. It is unclear whether or not he killed Sophie upon discovering him in her house. While preparing for the show, he dons make-up and wears the trademark crimson purple suit. Arthur kills Randall for kickstarting his downward spiral, but spares his other colleague Gary. As the latter was the only one that treated him nicely.  While on route, the detectives chase him, prompting him to take shelter in a subway among clowns who were inspired by his crimes, to take a stand against the rich society of Gotham. Which he uses to evade them, causing the clowns to injure the detectives in the process.  Upon his arrival he agrees to Murray's terms on the condition that Murray refers to him from then on as: Joker.  After fumbling through his act, he makes a speech about how society doesn't  notice people like him and berates Murray for making fun of him and confesses to the killings before shooting Murray dead.  Which kickstarts a city-wide riot that causes the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne. In turn kickstarting Bruce's journey into becoming Batman. Initially Joker gets arrested, but then freed, by his followers embracing them as the people that matter to him.  However in the end he is incarcerated at Arkham, before he plans his escape fulfilling his journey as the Clown Prince of Crime.

Now on the surface, the movie comes across as a dark, gritty deconstruction on the Coming of Age Genre. With Arthur portrayed for the most part as a sympathetic character who tries to make something of himself. Which he does. However due to the nature of the character he becomes, there are many hints that things aren't all they seem.

While the movie was not an adapation of any comic, it has taken inspirations from other works.  Such as implying Joker's involvement in the Wayne Murders similar to the 1989 Tim Burton Batman Film. But, the struggling comedian angle takes major inspiration from The Killing Joke.  And for those who have not read that comic or seen the adaptation it spawned, there was one key element in the Joker story that causes the movie to be seen in a different light. During his confrontation with, Joker laments that even he doesn't know who he is anymore. Reciting this immortal quote.

And since this movie overall has taken place in Joker's POV, for all we know some if not all of it was either at best an outright lie or at worst, choice C of his multiple choice past. Rather than have a full on origin story, we may have just merely taken a glimpse of the titular clown's damaged psyche.  And there have been several moments that show his delusions.  From the moment he imagined himself among Murray's audience, to the twist regarding Sophie.  With that in mind, how much of the story if not all of it was true or false? We may never know. And that is what scares us the most.

The movie was at first released in film festivals, winning several awards including but not limited to 3 Venice Film awards and one Actor Tribute Award in the Toronto International film festival.  Upon it's theatrical release it has broken many box office records and as of today has grossed a world wide total of $281.6 Million. $14.99 of it I myself have proudly personally spent on it.
And to those still convinced that this may incite some kind of violence I say this. If you truly believe it's going to happen, then congratulations, much like Harley Quinn you fell right into Joker's plans.

The movie is full of thrills, chills and will keep you on the edge of your seat. You'll laugh, you'll cry, but most of all you'll have something to talk about. But I'm not gonna lie, the movie will scare the living shit out of you.  Enjoy.

Straight Up Reviews: Pink Floyd The Wall

It's been a while since I did a review on this site, I thought I'd do it the old fashioned way because I am so mad that I may break every microphone I use.  As you no doubt of guessed, Nostalgia Critic has done a "Review" of The Movie Adaptation of The Wall. Years ago my counterpart S.T. did a written CIEIR on it back when he thought he was a real person. (Long Story.). But since CIEIR was more or less dedicated to finding out if concepts of fiction could exist for real and NC pissed me off that much, I thought it'd be the proper time to give a proper review of this movie.

First off a little history.  Pink Floyd started out as a Psychedelic/Space Rock band in 1963, it's members at the time Syd Barret, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Bob Klose.  Over time the band changed it's course in both member and music, with the most prominent leaving being Syd Barrett. Rumors of drugs and a lingering insanity on his part.  However none was so infamous than the 1977 Spitting Incident in Montreal. It was during a concert where the Band was promoting Animals and two things among most happened. The first sparked by a fan, who let off a firework, while the Band was performing "Pigs on the Wing." prompting Waters to rant on stage to the fan and the screaming fans that follwed. The second the aforementioned incident. Most concerts often have a fence or a barrier that allows the fans to see the musicians, but can't get near them. More or less out of fear of being swarmed or worse, some angry Misery style fan wanting to harm them one way or another. This concert was no exception. However one "Brave" individual decided to take it upon themselves to climb said barrier and meet the band face to face.  They got their wish, but on top of that, in the heat of his anger, Roger Waters spat directly in the fan's face.  However as justified in his anger he has been in this instance, Waters felt disgusted with himself afterwards. And while history shows the band didn't last long after, The Wall was meant to be his first stepping stone in redeeming himself.

Now it's not uncommon for music to tell a story, that's part of the medium. Whether it's a personal story or a fictional story. It makes no difference so long as it's entertaining. And this Album was no exception.  The Wall was made in 1979 and after it's astounding success it spawned many concerts, a feature film and is considered won of Pink Floyd's most well known, well liked albums along side Dark Side of The Moon.  And this story is just as important as the music used to entertain us. Which is why I was immediately shocked and disgusted the way Nostalgia Critic handled the "review", but I'll get to that later.

The Wall itself revolves around a protagonist by the name of Pink.  Pink serves as an amalgamation of life stories based around key members of the band. The most prominent being Syd Barret, who long since left before the conception of the album. Roger Waters, who insists that at least %75 of it is based around him and some shades of David Gilmour.

Ever since the day of his birth, Pink always felt like he got the shit end of the stick.  His father dying in World War II, before he had a chance to meet him.  His teachers constantly abusing him, while they themselves have to go home and deal with similar abuse from their fat and psychopathic wives.  Then we have his mother, a woman with a severe case of abandonment issues, who smothers and shelters Pink in fear he may leave or die like his father.  All these moments, inspire him to build the titular wall. A barrier between his own mind and all of reality, with realities woes serving as the bricks used to build the wall.

The Album time skips to Pink's adult life, where he is now a successful Rock Musician.  However his past insecurities along with the empty spaces of his wall, being filled with Drugs, Sex and Fame cause him to neglect his wife.  In an attempt to make up for his behavior he tries to call his wife during a post-concert party in Los Angeles.  Only to find out through the operator, that his wife cheated on him with another man. He brings one of his groupies home, in an attempt to revenge lay. However his repressed rage at his wife, not only halts said attempt, but causes him to go violent and trash the hotel room he was staying at.  All the while, imagining his wife as no longer a human being, but a monster out to hurt him.  He finishes his wall and cuts himself completely out of the real world.  Only to realize his mistake not too long after. While trapped, he reminisces about his past, specifically a moment where he among many families in Post-WWII England are waiting for word of their loved ones returning.  Eventually his manager comes in with a doctor in tow.  He gives Pink a drug in hopes to bring him out of his catatonia.  Only for Pink to transform into a Neo-Nazi persona with a surrogate band.  In essence he's become everything he's hated about the world and the very bricks in his wall. As his persona he rallies his concert goers to weed out anything he deems undesirable and gets them to take to the streets. Whether or not this actually happened or is a hallucination is uncertain, but the movie implies it was a hallucination.  At the height of his Reich he orders everything to stop and realizes that he is mostly to blame for the problems in his life. Specifically how he chose to deal with them.  He puts himself on trial where he puts caricatures of his Teacher, Wife and Mother on the stand who lay out their version of why he's the problem.  The teacher thinks he's undisciplined. The mother simply wants him home. His wife, the only one who actually has a right to be pissed, tells it flat out. ("You should have talked to me more often than you did. BUT NOOO!!!") The Judge, Worm Your Honour, who started out as a worm, but then morphed into a literal giant ass on two Legs, only takes the Wife and Mother's testimony into account and sentences Pink to be exposed before his peers. Pink tears down the wall, but it's left ambiguous to whether or not he lived through it and if he did, whether he learned his lesson or is doomed to repeat the cycle. ("Isn't this where we came in?")

The Wall, in all it's forms, the Rock Opera, The Concert, The Movie, has the themes of: Loss, Paranoia, Insecurity, Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll, Alienation and most of all, the endless cycle of conformity and anarchy. Pink shrived to be an anarchist, because he was angry at the conformity on both sides of the war which he believed resulted in his father's death. Only for him to become a conformist just as bad if not worse than the Nazis and teachers he hated as a child. He was afraid of getting smothered by his wife, which as a result alienated him from her and vice versa. He saw every perceived negative influence as monsters out to get and change him and thought trying to wall up his true feelings would make him feel better as he tried to fill the void with Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll. Only to realize that had he opened up more to the people that loved him he would have been able to let go of his past and become a better person. Which was ultimately what the monsters within his wall also wanted him to do. And whether or not he succeeded, died or was doomed to repeat the cycle, is up to us.

Now this is where I never got why Nostalgia Critic did what he did here.   All of this could have been easily addressed even with his clip-less review of the matter.  But instead he opted in a shallow, hollow parody that misses the mark on what the original work was meant to convey. And to top it off, you stole music from them. You changed the lyrics, but the instrumentals were the same and sold it as though it's your own.  Walker Brothers, I hope Waters sues you back to the stone age for this. Fair use does not apply to what you did here.

A Heroine's Triumph Music Video

The next chapter of my little hero music video series. After dropping Lisa off the roof, she reemerges as The Heroine. When they find out who the Thugs are working for, they split up as we follow her on damage control. Unlike the Hero who uses killing when pushed too far, The Heroine is more brutal in her sense of justice.  So expect a blood bath.

My new Mic sucks, but I can live with that, till I get a better one.  Much of why I picked this one, is because the Brothers seem to blur between the line of fiction and reality so I figured who better than.
